Who we are

We present you the Biobizkaia Health Research Institute (IIS) for the territory of Bizkaia, with a population of 1 million, which with more than 1,500 professionals and advanced infrastructures, supports an ecosystem of 11 health organizations, to promote research and innovation in health, aiming to add value and achieve an impact on improving the health of the population.

Biobizkaia, together with 3 other IISS (BIoaraba, Biogipuzkoa, Biosistemak) and the Basque Foundation for Health Innovation and Research (BIOEF), make up the network of Health Research Institutes of Euskadi in the Map of R&D&I Entities of the Basque Public Health System.

THE Department of Health, Osakidetza, the Basque Health Service, and BIOEF, promoted the creation of the IIS and, together with the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, they constitute the founding entities of it. In 2017, the BBK Banking Foundation was incorporated as a corporate institutional entity, sharing its orientation towards the improvement of the society of Bizkaia and involved in promoting the evaluation of impacts in actions. developed in the population of the territory, as well as in promoting international commitments, such as the SDGs 2030.

Bioibizkaia develops its activity with the vision of being recognized as a center for translational research and health innovation, a reference at the regional and state level, but especially as leader of international and high-impact projects, and establishing itself in its history as a hub for attracting clinical talent, researcher and innovator.

The core of the Institute is the Cruces University Hospital of the OSI Ezkerralde Enkarterri Cruces (Integrated Health Organization), and its scope of reference is the OSIs of the territory of Bizkaia, with other two University Hospitals, the Hospital Universitario Basurto and the Hospital Universitario Galdakao, integrated into their respective OSIS, the OSI Bilbao Basurto and the OSI Barrualde Galdakoa, as well as the regional hospitals of San Eloy (OSI Barkaldo Sestao) and the Hospital de Urduliz (OSI Uribe), the Bizkaia Mental Health Network and two Rehabilitation and Palliative Hospitals, Gorliz Hospital and Santa Marina Hospital. Department of Health

The Basque health model is developed in two basic institutions, the Department of Health and Osakidetza. The Department of Health forms the regulatory, planning and financing body of the Basque Health System, in addition to assuming other responsibilities in terms of rights and citizen participation and guaranteeing the general protection of public health. The Department of Health and Osakidetz carry out their main Research and Innovation activities through their three Health Research Institutes: IIS Bioaraba, IIS Biocruces-Bizkaia and IIS Biodonostia and the Chronicgune Health Services Research Center. These four R+D+b Centers, together with the Basque Foundation for Health Innovation and Research (BIOEF), which acts as their corporate head, make up the Map of R+D+b Organizations of the Basque Public Health System.

Osakidetza

The Basque Health Service was created in 1983, establishing itself as an autonomous body to provide comprehensive health care to citizens, financing itself with public budgets and with the aim of integrating within it all the devices and services that progressively was going to be responsible, with the aim of forming a single healthcare system with all existing public resources.

As a provider of Public Health Care in the Basque Country, through its dependent health organizations, it integrates 26 service organizations assigned to each of the three health areas into which the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country is divided. OSI Eskerraldea Enkarterri Cruces

The Cruces University Hospital (OSI EEC), which constitutes the core of the Institute, is a public hospital of the National Health System belonging to Osakidetza, inaugurated in 1955.

The mission of the Cruces University Hospital is to be a healthcare organization in Osakidetza, with highly specialized and benchmark services. That works to improve the health of citizens and generate knowledge and innovation useful for the sustainability of the health system and society.

After several phases of expansion and remodeling, currently the Cruces University Hospital is a 900-bed hospital center, which annually receives more than 25,000 admissions with more than 250,000 stays. OSI Bilbao Basurto

The OSI Bilbao Basurto (OSI BB) was established in January 2014 as a result of the integration into a single Organization, of the Basurto University Hospital (HUB) and the Bilbao Primary Care Region. Its area of influence is the municipalities of Bilbao and Alonsótegui with a population of approximately 350,000 inhabitants.

For hospital care, the HUB has 620 beds, with an activity of nearly 40,000 admissions, 28,000 surgical interventions and 742,000 specialized care consultations, as well as 2,847,000 consultations carried out in the 26 Primary Care Centers and Units. Consultations for Family Medicine, Nursing, Midwives, Pediatrics, Dentistry and PAC actions.

In addition to its healthcare activity, the OSI BB carries out both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching work for students of Medicine, Nursing, Midwives and Technicians, as well as specialized training for doctors, pharmacists, biologists and psychologists. OSI Barrualde-Galdakao

The OSI Barrualde-Galdakao, belonging to the Osakidetza Network, is an Organization integrated since January 2014 by the Galdakao-Usansolo Hospital, the Gernika-Lumo Hospital, 17 UAP, 4 Outpatient Clinics and 8 PAC. It covers more than 300,000 citizens of the Interior Region of Bizkaia and its mission is “to work to improve the health of our population with quality, safety and sustainability.”

The HGU is a general acute care hospital and constitutes the core of hospital activity with specialized medical-surgical services and references. It currently has 416 beds, receives more than 28,000 admissions annually with more than 111,000 stays and performs more than 25,000 surgical interventions. Biscay Mental Health Network

The Biscay Mental Health Network is a public health organization belonging to Osakidetza, which provides comprehensive care for the mental health of the population of Biscay, in collaboration with other organizations and institutions in the health and social fields, with a care model community. It integrates Outpatient Mental Health and the three psychiatric hospitals in Bizkaia: Bermeo Hospital, Zaldibar Hospital and Zamudio Hospital.

University of the Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (UPV/EHU)

It is the entity that owns 57% of Kutxabank and collaborates in promoting the region's economy through its investment activity in surrounding companies. Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience, is a research center promoted by Ikerbasque and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), dedicated to basic and translational research in neuro-glial biology.
