Virtual reality (2BRV)

Presentation

The virtual reality platform of IIS Biobizkaia was created at the end of 2022. It develops virtual reality projects for the healthcare sector, offering an immersive and personalized experience. The platform aims to improve accessibility and efficiency in the training of healthcare professionals, patient therapy, and the planning of medical interventions. It also seeks to reduce geographical barriers and improve the quality of medical care by simulating clinical scenarios and developing new diagnostic and treatment tools in a safe and controlled virtual environment.

General description

The goal of this platform is to create realistic scenarios, emergency simulations, and clinical procedures that improve medical training in a controlled and safe environment.

The inclusion of virtual reality in the healthcare environment brings a revolution in training and practice in the healthcare sector. The platform currently has the capacity to develop projects in virtual and mixed reality environments from the initial design stages to validation. Both the low-level programming of the interactions with objects in the scenes and the modelling of the scenarios and objects in them are carried out.

The platform is composed of a specialized team with different roles:

  • Unit Coordinator: Personnel expert in project management using agile methodologies.
  • VR developer specialized in health: Personnel expert in programming and designing interactive medical environments (Unity 3D environment).
  • 3D modeler and designer: Personnel expert in creating hyper-realistic healthcare environments, such as operating rooms, emergency rooms, and medical devices.

Projects

The platform participates in 2 projects included in the MedTech 2022-2024 grant framework.

VWTRIAJE

This project aims to create and develop a training environment for nursing triage. Through this tool, the aim is to provide training with uniform results that will enable decisions to be made more in line with the priority of health care. This training will provide greater agility and efficiency in the process.

VWUCIP

The objective of this project is the development of different simulation scenarios in a pediatric ICU. The training of different clinical scenarios is of special interest to all medical and nursing professionals who work with high technology and who have to make quick decisions in very complex and compromised contexts and, in general, to all professionals who require constant training and updating of protocols.

Infrastructure

IIS Biobizkaia is equipped with an immersive VIROO room. This room is a collaborative simulator that can be used as an immersive space, allowing remote connection of more users from other locations.

VIROO is a VR platform configured as a powerful innovation tool, leveraging the full potential of immersive technologies. It facilitates the creation of multi-user VR applications, manages VR applications, and deploys applications in remote and multi-user environments. Currently, it is composed of 4 cutting-edge VR headsets (HTC Vive Focus 3) and a control PC for the room.

The platform also has equipment for the development of different projects:

  • Virtual reality headsets (Pico Neo 4, Meta Quest 3).
  • Photogrammetry equipment (Reflex camera, 360 camera, iPad Pro).
  • High-performance computing equipment (laptops, workstations, graphic tablets, and software licenses).
